project 6 the long portrait – research

“Made popular on Vimeo by Clayton Cubitt, the long portrait is a classic Vimeo project that takes portraiture photography and transfers it to video form. The result is a video that show a subject’s subtle expressions, mannerisms, and gestures.”

Clayton Cubitt has taken on many different types of long portrait videos , he describes a long portrait on his web site as “The experience of a portrait, extended into minutes. Breathing in and out with the subject.”  – http://claytoncubitt.com/long-portraits/

-Long portrait of Graciella Longoria, on the first anniversary of her father’s death in a car accident.

-Photographed wet from the shower, experiencing a sad song.

I decided to show my subject a video from YouTube. The video is called ‘Don’t Hug me I’m Scared’. It is a British short film produced by a Becky Sloan and Joesph Pelling since the year of 2011. There are 5 videos in total but I thought I would show the first one as personally I think it is more intense to watch. The video is made to look like a normal friendly children’s programme, with singing and taking puppets and cute animals. A few minutes into the video it takes a dark turn and includes loads of blood and guts. They ave ironically juxtaposed music and children’s puppets against disturbing imagery.

I thought that I would get an interesting response from this because the video is very unusual and quite creepy. As the video is on YouTube and is very popular; I wanted to make sure that person I was filming had not seen it before, in order to get a true response.

project 5 typology of a city – research

After researching typology of a city online and looking at some examples I now have a clear understanding of what I need to do to for this project. Typology generally means different photographs but with the same or similar people and/or objects.

For example here is some work by Steve Tyler , he takes images of the same sort of objects however changes something ever so slightly such as the composition, the colour, the background etc. Another thing that drew my attention to his work is how he displays them. He generally shows them in a gird system like these ones :

These photographs put in grids are part of a project that Steve Tyler is working on about mass consumption. I like the idea of the grids but I’m not sure it will work with my idea.

After looking online at all the different styles of typology photography, I decided that my main interest was the ones that focused on people and real life rather than objects, places or animals; mainly because I think facial expressions, hairstyles, make-up, clothing etc. can all say so much about a person without them having to say anything.

The project specifies that we are to take our images in a city. I live in Lincoln so I figured that the Lincoln high street where all the main shops are would be the best place to find people.

To be more specific about photographing just people , I wanted to challenge myself and do my project on a certain type of person. I have been influenced by my project from last year when we had to photograph strangers, I took particular interest to the elderly and decided that for this project I will focus on photographing older people of the female gender and shall call my typology images of them ‘Grandmas’.

Fortunately for me, there seemed to be quite a lot of elderly females around Lincoln on the Tuesday afternoon that I decided to go and photograph.

Here is an example of a photographer Stephen Gill, based in London that has taken a set of images of older ladies with their shopping trolleys. “Stephen learnt the significance of these humble devices as instruments of mobility, offering dominion of the pavement to their owners and permitting an independence which might otherwise be denied.”

For my portraits to avoid problems and motion blur I increased my shutter speed , I changed my ISO to 400 which meant that my camera was more sensitive to the lighting in the studio. I used a source of two LED lights and changed the brightness of them to create shadows in my images. These images would fit well in something like a mens fashion or grooming magazine like the mens fashion magazine  (MFM). Here are some images I found in mens magazines that could be compared to some of mine.
