In the workshop, our class got together to try out some new formalism style photography in the studio. This particular image was my favourite. Although usually I tend to be attracted to lot of different bright colours, I thought the fact that all the objects are grey / white / black has an unusual look to it. This is where I got the idea to concentrate on experimenting with colour in the studio whether it be the background, the object or something else in the image.
When I get round to taking my own images in the studio I will experiment using different colours but also objects and background with the same colour like these ones taken in the photography studio in week 3.
Project one, ready to hand focuses on still life in new formalism. After being introduced to this in the workshops and the lectures I decided to look at new formalist photographers to get inspired to come up with my own idea take my own photographs.
Although he is not actually a photographer, but an artist I was very inspired by Daniel Gordon’s work. Focusing on bold , bright colours and textures I thought all of his pictures really stood out.
There is Jessica Eaton, whose work doesn’t even look photographic, even though it is. She again uses bright bold colours and shapes which brings the new formalism look.
Toilet paper magazine, suggested to me by my tutor has also become a big inspiration of mine when focusing on new formalism and still life. I looked online on their website and also looked at different images used in the magazine and found some very interesting studio taken images.
I found some interesting images that represented my idea of new formalism on a website that I am familiar with called http://www.boredpanda.com/ – it is a leading art, design and photography community for creative people. On there I came across a photographer called Jamie Sanchez and here are some of his images that caught my eye……

These images very much appeal to me because of the bright contrasted colours. I am a big fan of bright colour and try and present this style in my own work so to do this for new formalism came quite easy to me. I think that the background in these images are just as important as the objects that are being photographed because of the contrast between the two.
